Florida Still Undecided

March 7, 2004

Florida was so close in the 2000 election that it was essentially evenly split between Bush and Gore. The 2004 race is shaping up to be no more certain.

A Miami Herald/St. Petersburg Times poll finds Florida voters leaning toward Kerry

While Kerry secured the nomination only days ago, he holds a 49 to 43 percent lead over a president who just four months ago led every potential Democratic challenger by as many as 18 percentage points.

In contrast, a South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the Florida Times-Union.
poll taken a week earlier shows Bush with a similar lead over Kerry: Florida leans toward Bush for 2004, survey shows

Asked to choose between the president and his likely Democratic challenger, Florida voters favored Bush over John Kerry by 47 percent to 42 percent.

For a third opinion, American Research groups sees Kerry and Bush Tied Among Likely Voters in Florida

A total of 45% of likely voters say they would vote for Kerry if the presidential election were being held today and 44% say they would vote for Bush. A total of 4% of likely voters say they would vote for Ralph Nader and 7% of likely voters are undecided.
